Discover the Iconic Sights of the Netherlands
When you think of the Netherlands, traditional windmills, vibrant tulip fields, picturesque canals, and the lively heart of Amsterdam are likely among the first images that come to mind. Amsterdam is celebrated for its charming waterways, historic architecture, vibrant nightlife, and distinctive culture. Yet beyond the bustling capital lies a beautiful countryside filled with peaceful villages, traditional customs, and iconic Dutch landscapes.
Combine your Amsterdam stay with a memorable journey into the surrounding countryside. The charming villages of Zaanse Schans, Marken, Edam, and Volendam are all within easy reach of the city centre. Escape the urban energy, enjoy the tranquillity of the countryside, and experience traditional Dutch life surrounded by colourful windmills and scenic landscapes.
Step Into a Living Open-Air Museum
Once you leave Amsterdam behind, the scenery transforms into a world of historic villages and traditional landscapes. Many of the small towns surrounding the capital feel like authentic open-air museums, offering a glimpse into the Netherlands of the past.
The Dutch Countryside and Windmills Tour takes you from Amsterdam to Zaanse Schans, Edam, Volendam, and the former island of Marken. Please note that the order of the visits may vary.
Admire the Historic Windmills of Zaanse Schans
At Zaanse Schans, immerse yourself in one of the Netherlands’ most famous windmill landscapes. More than ten traditional windmills stand along the banks of the Zaan River, creating an iconic Dutch panorama.
The surrounding area is freely accessible, allowing you to stroll through this fascinating open-air museum and admire its historic character. Some windmills can also be entered for a small additional fee, with one windmill visit included in the All-In Tour.
Zaanse Schans is one of the most memorable places to experience the traditional windmills and countryside of Holland.
Experience the Traditional Charm of Volendam
Continue to Volendam, a quintessential Dutch fishing village renowned for its picturesque waterfront and traditional atmosphere. Take a leisurely walk along De Dijk and explore the charming harbour area.
During your visit, discover the Cheese Factory, where you can sample delicious Dutch cheeses and, depending on available time, learn more about the traditional cheese-making process. If you choose to enjoy lunch in Volendam, freshly caught local fish is a popular choice.
Explore Historic Edam
Discover Edam, the birthplace of the famous Edam cheese. Recognisable for its small, often red-coated cheese balls, Edam cheese has been enjoyed around the world for centuries.
However, there is much more to this charming village than its celebrated cheese. With origins dating back to the 12th century, Edam is filled with historic character and picturesque streets. During the tour, enjoy a 30-minute guided walk through the village, taking in its traditional architecture and peaceful atmosphere.
Cruise Between Marken & Volendam
The fourth destination is Marken, a picturesque village that was once an island in Lake Markermeer and is now connected to the mainland as a peninsula.
From Marken to Volendam, enjoy a scenic 30-minute boat journey across Lake IJsselmeer. This exclusive experience is a distinctive feature of the tour, as it is the only tour to include this particular boat trip.
Relax on board and admire the beautiful scenery as you sail past the charming towns of Monnickendam and Katwoude.
Discover Traditional Dutch Clog-Making
While exploring Marken, take care to remain on the designated roads, as the village’s traditional homes and gardens are located close to the walking paths.
Complete your countryside experience with a visit to a traditional clog, or wooden shoe, maker. Here, these iconic Dutch shoes are still produced using techniques that have been preserved for around 100 years, with the help of steam-powered tools.
You will also have the opportunity to try the traditional clogs yourself and discover just how comfortable they can be.
A Memorable Dutch Countryside Experience
This captivating countryside tour offers a wonderful opportunity to discover a side of the Netherlands far removed from the lively streets of Amsterdam. From historic windmills and traditional fishing villages to famous cheese, picturesque waterways, and centuries-old crafts, every stop introduces you to another aspect of Dutch heritage.
Take a relaxing break from the city and explore the peaceful landscapes of Zaanse Schans, Edam, Volendam, and Marken. With its blend of culture, history, scenery, and authentic local experiences, this tour offers a memorable adventure for both adults and children.
Step beyond Amsterdam and discover the timeless charm of the Dutch countryside.
