Discover the Real Story Behind the Film:
The story that inspired The Sound of Music is deeply connected with Salzburg and its surrounding region. Many scenes were filmed at authentic locations throughout the city and nearby countryside, allowing visitors to experience the landscapes that became famous through the movie.
The real-life story of the Trapp family began in Salzburg, where Maria was invited to teach Georg von Trapp’s children in 1926. The couple married in 1927, while the family later left Austria in 1938 to escape the Nazi regime. Their departure was considerably less dramatic than portrayed in the film.
Released in 1965, The Sound of Music was adapted from the successful 1959 stage musical and inspired by Maria von Trapp’s 1949 memoir, The Story of the Trapp Family Singers.
