About This Experience
Discover the lesser-known treasures of Palazzo Medici Riccardi and the magnificent Palazzo Vecchio, one of Florence’s most important historic buildings and a former centre of Florentine political power.
For more than three centuries, the Medici family shaped the destiny of Florence, leaving an extraordinary legacy that can still be seen throughout the city today. Their influence is deeply woven into Florence’s history, art, architecture, and cultural identity. Originally a prosperous family of bankers and merchants, the Medici gradually rose to prominence and became one of the most influential families in Europe.
Their passion for culture and the arts was equally remarkable. As generous patrons of artists and architects, the Medici supported and commissioned works by some of history’s greatest masters, including Leonardo da Vinci, Donatello, and Michelangelo. Their extraordinary contribution to the arts earned them a reputation as among the greatest patrons of the Renaissance.
During this private 4-hour experience, uncover fascinating stories about Florence and the Medici dynasty at a relaxed pace. With skip-the-line admission and an expert private guide, explore two of the family’s most significant residences and gain a deeper understanding of their enduring legacy.
Your tour begins at Palazzo Medici Riccardi, the first great Medici palace, once the residence of Cosimo the Elder and Lorenzo the Magnificent. The palace also welcomed some of the leading artists of the Renaissance, including Donatello, Michelangelo, Paolo Uccello, Benozzo Gozzoli, and Botticelli.
Follow your guide through the palace’s elegantly decorated rooms until you reach the piano nobile, where the extraordinary Magi Chapel awaits. Painted around 1459 by Benozzo Gozzoli, this intimate chapel is almost completely covered with a celebrated fresco cycle depicting the Journey of the Magi, enriched with portraits of members of the Medici family, their allies, and prominent figures from Florentine public life.
Continue your walk through Piazza del Duomo and Piazza della Signoria before arriving at Palazzo Vecchio, one of Florence’s most significant historic government buildings. Originally the seat of the Signoria of the Florentine Republic in the 14th century, it later became an important political centre under Medici rule.
Admire the distinctive Tuscan Gothic architecture of Palazzo Vecchio, traditionally attributed to Arnolfo di Cambio, along with its imposing crenellated tower, known as the Torre di Arnolfo. Rising prominently above the city, this historic tower remains one of Florence’s most impressive medieval landmarks.
Inside, follow your guide through the magnificent courtyard before entering the spectacular Salone dei Cinquecento, or Hall of the Five Hundred. This vast chamber is considered one of the palace’s most important spaces from both an artistic and historical perspective, featuring ornate ceilings, monumental frescoes, gilded details, and imposing sculptures.
Continue through the fascinating Monumental Quarters, exploring a remarkable succession of official rooms, private apartments, terraces, and courtyards. These richly decorated interiors feature works connected to renowned artists such as Michelangelo, Giorgio Vasari, and Donatello.
By the end of your visit, you’ll have gained a fascinating introduction to the Medici dynasty and two of their most iconic Florentine residences. Yet their legacy extends far beyond these walls—their influence can still be discovered throughout Florence in its palaces, churches, galleries, gardens, and monuments.
Let your private guide reveal more of the Medici story and discover the remarkable legacy of the family that helped transform Florence into the Cradle of the Renaissance.
