The Belvedere ranks among Vienna’s most renowned museums and is one of the city’s most visited attractions. Its popularity is largely due to its exceptional collection of works by Austrian artist Gustav Klimt. The museum houses 24 of Klimt’s works, including his iconic masterpiece, The Kiss.
Originally surrounded by vineyards on the outskirts of the imperial city, the Upper and Lower Belvedere Palaces were built as the summer residence of Prince Eugene of Savoy. The two magnificent Baroque palaces are connected by beautifully designed gardens, creating a spectacular setting for art, architecture and history.
Built between 1717 and 1723, the Upper Belvedere stands majestically on a hill and offers impressive views across Vienna. The palace also holds a special place in Austrian history, having hosted the signing of the Austrian State Treaty in 1955.
